Like the bear-men from The Thirteenth Warrior? Or was Crichton just ripping off Tolkien?

Great piece, the shading and intricate details make the design feel very real.

I am pretty sure they both based it on the same historical source because the description is pretty damn similar, substitute bears with wolves. Although technically, Tolkien wrote about it first. :P

Sorry to necro this post, but I have to ask :)

This guy is actually based off something in the books?! (I know you're the concept artist and not from the content dep., but I'm really curious about this one..)

I'm not entirely sure if they were mentioned in the original trilogy, but we are also working with information based on the LOTR pen-and-paper RPG that is like 20 years old, so it is possible it is a reference from there, which could have been entirely made up or taken from the silmarils/Grey Havens etc. (which we DON'T have the rights to directly work from).
