Layers are my best friend in Photoshop. 
I use lots and lots of them (this one had about 80+, but thats just cause I use too many, lol) Putting the colours into different layers makes it a lot easier to colour and shade the individual parts.

I see I use less layers but it works anyway. I just don't like a lot of layers lol.
