Well considering the "horrifying" pic was the inspiration, it didn't take much imho.

Oh, it's no less vector than an object with a gradient or transparency... people don't seem to complain about gradient meshes, which are blending point of raster color. Honestly, they're all raster operations on a vector object, and they're completely scalable without degradation. :)

If you read the SVG, it's no different than other parts of the svg file... a bunch of parameters which allow for scalability. ;)
