That was purely unintentional, though.
Now that you mentioned Gary, though... I always felt that he was never given the attention he deserved in the anime. He's supposed to be Ash's rival, but you rarely ever saw him. That's something I'm hoping to do differently in my adaptation.
And rest assured that my version of Gary will NOT turn into some researcher of lab assistant or whatever the hell happened to Gary in the anime. Ya, I know he went back to battling before the Ash went to Sinnoh, but... I dunno, I really don't like the way that his character was handled in the anime.
And Paul's an asshole. But I like his clothes, so...

lol I think Paul is the meanest character so far introduced in Pokemon, he's just a jerkface to everyone (at least Gary had the tallent to back up his "I'm better than you"-ness but Paul isn't even that amazing as a trainer yet.)
Well, there's more to it than just the fact that Gary was a better trainer. Gary might have been strict with his Pokémon at times, but he always showed a love for his Pokémon. Paul isn't strict, he's abusive. And he has no qualms in letting go of a Pokémon if he feels that it's too weak.
In regards to Gary's jerkishness... there was always a playful and cocky way that he did it. Sure, Gary was a jerk, but he was a fun jerk! Paul, on the other hand, is just cold hearted and ruthless. There's a reason why Gary had a lot of pretty cheerleader girlfriends and Paul's always by himself...

XD We can't forget about his cheerleaders XD Heh, I wonder what they did when Gary decided to become a professor?
They got surprised that he turned into a nerd and left him, I guess.
