I think it works if you colour on a separate layer, then delete the background. At least, that works on photoshop...

The two programs are similar, but I cant seem to find the "transparent background" tool in Illustrator....

Basically, vectors are nice, sharp, crisp lines drawn in the computer.
What I recently learned how to do, however, is sketch a piece, scan it, and with one button make the lines look like they're inked!

You see, your avatar also has vector lines, but they had to be physically drawn in with a tablet.

i dont know how to control them. there are two modes to vector lines (er...something...) i have no idea...something my friend told me when he was usin Adobe Illustrator. i traditionally ink my stuff, scan, then fool with the brightness and contrast to get a crisp look (depends on what ive drawn, though, that will give a certain effect).
