Very cool, although I wonder- what kind of enamel is it that will only stick to copper/nickel/base metals? All the enamel I've ever used has been able to adhere to any metal, as long as the metal's melting point is higher of course.
I read through your description - enamel works beautifully on silver, but you have to use fine silver (or if you use sterling silver, you have to raise a layer of fine silver up to the surface before you enamel on it).
I'm not completely sure what kind of enamel it is.... apparently there were some small unlabeled containers of enameling powder sitting around in the jewelry lab (heaven only knows where they came from) and the art majors just started experimenting with them. The other students have worked their way through the stuff and have set up a system with samples and numbers so we can at least know which powder creates which color. That's about it though.
The other students only did enameling with the kiln. I knew I had to try to find a way to do it with a torch instead, so I could direct the heat more and keep it from melting down all my soldering work. I experimented with both nickel and sterling silver. The only two enamel powders I tested were two different black ones. I tested them with an acetylene torch only, not the kiln. Both enamels stuck only to the nickel. When placed on silver, the enamels pooled on top and pulled together into little droplets, acting kinda the way water does when you put it on a glass microscope slide. When the enamel cooled, I was able to flake it off quite easily with my fingernail. It just wasn't sticking to the silver. And so.... voila! Silver-nickel-silver sandwich!
