"Now someone please tell me that if SERAPHIM are big snakes, at what point did the Christian cosmology decide that snakes are BAD? It couldn't have been only that tempting little apple thing..." You make a good point... But allow me to announce my opinion. I doubt the Christian cosmology ever decided that snakes are bad. Why do I believe so? Because the serpent is not only the symbol of evil but also the symbol of healing arts. Contradictionary? Perhaps so, but both of these symbolic meanings come from the Bible itself. Needless to say, the "symbol of evil" has roots in the Biblical story of Adam and Eve... That is something everybody knows, I am sure. But most people don't know about the Biblical story of Moses and the brass serpent. In that story the Israelites are being bitten and killed by snakes in the desert, for which Moses asked help from God, who in turn told Moses to make a snake out of bronze. When people looked at this serpent, they got healed and lived. That is why I believe Christian cosmology never actually made snakes bad. Also, let's not forget that in Exodus Moses also shows how mighty his Lord is by turning his staff into a serpent. The ignorant who wished to adhere only those Biblical accounts which make snakes appear in bad light (the tempting snake in the Paradise, the mention about Satan being the old serpent in the book of Revelations) decided that snakes are primarily evil. The people who wanted to see only one side of the big picture decided that. Well, I hope I made my point clear enough here. I just have to admit it's kind of scary when I often seem to know details (like this serpent thing) that many of my religious acquaintances don't have any idea about... Even though I am an atheist myself. O_o
I was familiar with Moses' brass serpent staff, and his wooden staff that became a serpent - these are stories that we don't often hear from the preacher. We must hunt them down on our own... And then we sit back to ponder why, why, why we don't get to hear any of that stuff from the preacher, and why no one talked about it way back in Sunday school. It was many years after I finished all that stuff that I began researching biblical odds-and-ends like this. All I remember from those fusty old classes was that serpent-equals-Devil bit. I always thought it was ridiculous from a purely practical standpoint, as wild mice and rats would be far more trouble without lovely snakes to eat them! Therefore, snakes couldn't be all bad. Which leads us back to the seraphim, who are giant holy snakes, who sing sweetly and burn brightly. I'm telling you, the Judeo-Christian cosmology is at LEAST as weird as anyone else's, even if they don't tell us the good stuff during those long Sunday sermons.
I'm not an atheist, myself, but I'm also not as strongly Catholic as I was raised to be. I've learned about too many other ideas to believe that any one of them is all correct, or that any other is all wrong. Each of them have too many interesting ideas to dismiss them arbitrarily!

That's why I quickly got sick of my religions classes. The teachers told the same stries the preachers did... Can you imagine what it's like for an atheist to hear about Jesus' life every damn year since the first grade....? It all got old so very fast. Don't get me wrong, I love religions in a mythological/cosmological/whatever-logical sense, but hearing the same stories every year gave me a feeling of some sort of attempted brainwashing. So I've started to think about that if I really want to know something about different religions I just have to find out everything myself. That seems to be the only way to get to know something "extra", so to say. Like that stuff with snakes.... I always wondered why they never got tired of telling "serpent=bad, evil" and left out the stuff about serpent being also the symbol of healing... So boring... So one-sided...

Glad you like this one. I think it's one of my favorites so far... Granted, I have't gotten far into the new set yet.
