I agree with your Metroid take--even though I love it, Samus armor is highly modifiable and this looks close enough! Your metroids though, without Samus there, would not read as metroids to me. There's always some sort of mysterious goo floating around inside (you've got that part), but the most typical "iconic" metroids seem to have three round "organs" in the middle of their sac-like bodies. That's the only thing I'd change (Samus' right hip is a little wonky but I think that's a style issue )
BTW, I saw some of your art at a booth at Sakuracon! It's neat to see it all biggified on paper instead of the screen.
