did the dot trail with a custom brush (scattering and fade diameter),

then put the ant layer on top of that, which hid the trail of dots,

then put the magnifying glass on top of that, set it to multiply,

then masked the ant layer to only inside the magnifying glass,

then wrote the text and put it under the ant layer,

then copied the "d..." and resized it, warped it to make it bulge a little, and masked it to only inside the magnifying glass

and voila! magnified-ification-ified

ah, it hides part of a layer in photoshop. it's like erasing, but you can put back what you took out really easily.
