Something that bothers me though is the background and how it suddenly changes with the gradient. Maybe simplifying the background could make it look a bit better?

I dunno, In my humble opinion, I think you may have overused the gradients a bit much.
I quite like the flat colours that dav5 has going on right now.
Also, similarly, the blurred logo behind the search text. It might work better if it wasn't blurred, or even not there.
Still, I'm interested to see where you go next
