Actually, Masashi Kishimoto stated in an interview that he's a big yaoi supporter, especially of SasuNaru. And he said that he's going to end the series with an immensely popular couple and that there is a good chance it'll be yaoi. SasuNaru is immensely popular! He also said that their relationship is supposed to dance on the border of best friend to Rival or lover.

I cant remember where I read the article. My friend told me about part of it. There was this one article though with shonen jump...
Shonen Jump Question:
Naruto and Sasuke kiss (accidentally) in the first chapter where they appear together. Does this add a special dimension to their rivalry?

Masashi Kishimoto Answer:
I didn’t have any particular reason for it, other then to surprise readers. I mainly did it because I don’t think there has ever been a manga where two rivals kissed. Also, by having this encounter, it was easier to set up the love triangle: Sakura, who had intended to be the first one to kiss Sasuke, has it stolen by her rival Naruto, Sasuke and Naruto are rivals, so there’s an added tension there. And so on and so forth.

Back it up! Naruto is Sakura's rival!? since when? And over what? Sasuke's affection perhaps? And what was that you said Kishimoto, "it was easier to set up the love triangle" What love triangle? The only soultion: Naruto thinks he likes Sakura in the first few chapters, Sakura obsesses over Sasuke, Sasuke saves and dies for who? Oh right-Naruto! "there's an added tension there"...Why would there be an added tension between Sasuke and Naruto (I mean they already had tension) unless they had strong feelings for each other?
