in some of the retellings the White Stag is portrayed with only one antler because it's a hermaphrodite, so it's only half male.

Lolwow. This is pretty freaking nifty anyway, but it's actually kind of a surprise and, well, I learned something new today. /: See, I had no idea that there was actual mythology behind a white stag. Heh. Oops. xD
Ironically, it also makes me think of a neat little story. A month or two ago, some friends and I were driving through our neighborhood at like, 1AM, on one of those, you know, 1AM Wal-Mart trips. There's actually a big half-forest half-dirtfield construction site along the way, and it's surprisingly rural for being in Raleigh, but anyway. It was like, twenty-five degrees out, so it was freezing, but I'm glad it was, because with my windows half-frosted over, I was going like, ten miles an hour.
And as we were passing the construction site, I glanced over, and I shit you not, there on the side of the road, making its way up a little incline and into the trees surrounding the field, there was a white deer. (I think it was actually a doe, but I didn't get a great look because it was only there for a few seconds.) I dunno. I thought it was really beautiful, but I didn't realize just how awesome it was until like. Just now. xDDD
And on the topic of your actual painting, I like it. 0: The plants in the background are awesome for a reason of which I'm not entirely sure, too. And I uh, think it's pretty nifty he's just got the one antler. /: You did waaay better than I could have on the proportions and whatnot for it being the first time you've drawn the animal. xD

yeah, white deer are rare but not unheard of. Some species are more prone to it then others. The legend of the white stag originates from celtic mythology and kinda makes me think that it may be there version of a unicorn or something with the one antler and all.
In the picture I wanted the trees behind him to looks otherworldly, like he was stepping out of the fey world and into ours, hence the ripples of light and glowing trees that fade into grass and forest.
and deer are a pain to draw >.< horses are easier in my opinion and horses are hard as hell.

I think the background looks pretty awesome, especially given the effect you wanted to achieve with it. (Lol, I uh, think you succeeded. xD )
It's pretty nifty.
