The foreground, is good, too. But, to me, it doesn't really look Japanese, perhaps because I've not seen enough Japanese art.
To me, the foreground, while good, looks like a cross between generically Oriental and Farthing Wood (remember that show? ). I have NO IDEA why that is, though. The way that the bold lines are muted, perhaps? The fact that it looks like watercolours (good job there, btw)? I don't know.
But it's really good, regardless of my probably baseless commentary.

The background especially looks wonderful. The sunset is fantastic: I thought it was a "real" watercolour at first. The water is pretty cool too, enough of a watery hint, but without overdoing it to get away from a traditional Japanese look.
The lineart on the foreground is a little odd: I think the sharp digital black line seems to have reacted badly to the texture you applied to the page or something in a way a pen or pencil probably wouldn't have. It looks a little pixellated. Still, it defines the areas of colour pretty well, and you've captured the style really well.
The colouring of the foreground is lovely and understated: I would guess that it is very hard to do right and I like how you've handled it.
Also, the framing is a lovely touch!

I can never get the hang of lines in digital work. That's why most of my digital stuff is drawn on paper an just coloured on computer.
I'm currently trawling through a buildup of deviations. I keep forgetting that just because I'm not submitting anything doesn't mean no-one else is! At this rate I'll be seeing your little dudes in person before I get a chance to comment on them online! They look good in thumbnail though.

The colour grading and the trees in particular were based on japanese prints (like this one: [link]) They also seem to have a trend of a close-up of plants in the foreground coming in from the left, with water fields and sky in the background. ([link]) Perhaps I should have put in some of those boxes with words in them... but I can't write japanese
The picture does definitely have a strong dose of Aoife-style to it, but then, I don't know how to draw any other way ;-P
Thanks for the commentary, base or no. And yes, I do remember the animals of Farthing Wood! (Ambles off to find some episodes online)

No worries about no delay in commenting: as you say, you'll probably get to see them soon, in real life.
It can be good to get some practice with a new way of doing things though. This digital piece looks cool, just need to get the hang of digital lineart.
By the way, what's the story with your sig? It's a bit odd...

Nice and calm. The ripples in the water are perfect. I like the sky and how the hills fade into it. Maybe the sky has a little too much grain/noise to it, but it does make the image pop.
