What is 'real' music, in your opinion?
I think real music is actually mozart/bach's pieces. We get absorbed in pop and rock, but it seems as not everyone has the appreciation of music without lyrics.

There is no real music because there is no such thing as false music. Music is music, period. Adjectives such as real of fake do not apply.

Maybe someone on an acid trip whose brain distorts sensorial input transforming visuals into sounds... maybe that could be classified as fake music, since music is not taking place anywhere. But other than that, the real/fake music argument is a huge pile of bullshit to me.

I'm a classical trained pianist, btw, so it's not like I'm out to defend pop music or anything like that.

Morbid fact of the week: Each year, the Malagasy people of Madagascar perform a funeral tradition called Famadihana. This ceremony involves digging up the bones of their loved ones, dressing them with new clothes and dancing with them.
actually, it doesn't matter whether the person is on drugs or not, because the only reality we perceive is subjective. other than that, i agree with you entirely, as i indicated in my response to the OP.

Music is music. It doesn't matter who's playing it. It's still music.

What I meant is that music, being an arrangement of sound and silence in time, is deliberate. Sensorial deception via drugs, however, is not (sure, you are in control of the act of taking drugs, but the effects and reactions it creates are not up to you.) Since there is no musician behind sensorial deception, I'd say one could argue such music is indeed "fake."

I agree about our perceptions being subjective. There is still, however, a degree of control your brain possesses that some drugs take away for certain lapses of time.

and what about the music i hear in my head all the time, whether something i heard or something my brain is making up? in the complete absence of drugs, mind you. is that fake?
