But we should know that after Nine Inch nails left their record label and
went independent they put out a mind blowing album. Called The SLIP
the best thing is, its absolutely free. But I'm not here to rave about how cool
it is. (but fuck that guy just keeps on giving- Ghosts 1-9)

What will happen to the music market now if more bands go this route?

What will happen to the music market? People will be earning respectable incomes but there'll be less hangers on earning ridiculously large paychecks for unnecessary jobs.
Not necessarily a bad thing, considering how few people are making the tonnes of money in the music biz (and most of them are in management and other corporate roles).

I don't think anything can kill the big music factories anyway, but we ARE seeing more exposure for independant labels and unsigned artists.

No, they didn't.

Quite a few bands went this route, including Marillion, who used the web to obviate studio advances, marketing advances, and attenuate touring costs starting in the mid 90s.

Other bands/artists have started their own boutique labels and had online offerings for years.

The only thing NIN did was offer a very public rebuke with a very large, pedantic audience to swell with glee over it.

NIN and Radiohead did it after making their millions from record labels. it still took them 15+ years to accomplish it. The Beatles shunned their record label, bands do it all of the time, but seemingly only after running the circuit for plenty of years. Record labels are nowhere near going extinct. i wish people didn't blow these kind of things out of proportion like they do. look at where the artists you cite have been for the last decade.

and we can also take into account that In Rainbows is probably the weakest Radiohead release to date and i was never much for NIN so i can't say much about this release.

those a very good points. I don't think the record label will ever disappear bands need promotion and management. But you can see trends already happening; The Reconturs put out an album without even publicity, Green day works under fake band names. I'm not saying its going to change over night and your right a band these bands already have a strong following. Take in account the combination of Downloads, Myspace and Last FM stations which bypass the middle man- the record label. I'm not here to shake up anyone's bird cage but to think that nothing is gonna happen to the record label is a bit naive. This is like a mix tap you made for a friends except your friends is the world.

You, my dear sir, speak rubbish. Let me give you an example of but one band: Marillion.

Marillion shunned their record label and went indie back when Radiohead were barely a whimper on the music scene's radars. They were using the Internet to promote their music and gather funding for tours back when the Internet, for most people, was this hazy image of something that a computer does, if that. They were holding pre-order campaigns of their albums through their website when other bands were screaming that the Interwebs are EVIL and full of crooks.

Get your bloody facts right.

(And yes, I know I'm sort of duplicating Zeruch's post, but it's so strong a point that I had to write this.)
