So, I figured I'd make another post here. I remember once this girl said if you take drugs to make art, then it's not really art. Well, I've never seen any of the girls art, although I was friends with her. But what I can say about her is she is one of those kind of cute but stuck up in her own way bohemian girls with rich white parents. You know, one of those people who walks around all "artsy fartsy" trying to express herself by any means possible. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

But is taking drugs to induce creativity wrong or some how taboo? Some people say it is. But I personally don't think it is. I've always loved drawing and art. Yet somehow this girl would categorize me as some kind of a dullard or "psuedo artist."

Many of the greatest artists took drugs to expand their minds. Such as Jim Morrison and the Doors, Jimi Hendrix, all of the Beatles, Donovan, Huxley, Basquiat, Warhol (well, I actually can't say for sure about him, but I would be surprised if he didn't). But yeah, it's all open to discussion and I feel like debating. What do you all think?

Depending on what you take and what art you do, drugs can have positive or negative influence. Or no influence at all.

I would say that taking drugs for the sole purpose of gaining inspiration is an odd thing, but taking drugs and ending up inspired and acting upon that inspiration wouldnt make it not art. I think that drugs can aid in breaking down some of the self-conscienceness people feel. I dont think its a negative thing (unless it becomes an addiction as opposed to a causual fun).

I know a lot of artists and art students that think using drugs in any part of the creative process, even if it's indirectly part of the process, is not kosher; they feel that making art while on drugs is not making art, that it is somehow the "drug" that is making the art and not the artist. I know artists that can't really produce work unless they can get high. I also know a doctor of psychology with a background in art that feels drugs are just a way of altering one's perception, and that analyzing subjects from different perspectives is a great tool for artists.

I think the whole language involved in what we're talking about is completely loaded, though. The thought of "taking drugs to induce creativity," as you put it, is ridiculous to me--it suggests that the one taking drugs is not creative without the drugs.

Inspiration is inspiration, drugs or no. Drugs may point to other issues that need dealing with, but if someone can create great art while stoned off their heads, then more power to them, \'cause I doubt I could.

What about those who didn't take drugs to make art? I don't think drugs and alcohol should be the goto source for creativity and a kiss from your muse. Don't you think its better and cheaper if you are able to find that within yourself rather than needing a crutch?
I'd rather spend my money on more art supplies.

Although I would have to agree with that statement largely. It's kind of hard not to feel creative after a hit of good acid.

There's a theory that LCD partially removes a filter in your mind allowing you to have a greater view of reality. Beyond that, there's probably a lot of spiritual and meditative factors than may improve whatever you're trying to create. A buddy and I tried to write a rock song emulating Kirk Cobain. It didn't work out too well though.

art is art, however it comes to be.

I would never take drugs but I think art is art and sometimes drugs make some crazy art...
