What's the first book you remember reading?

I'm not sure if it was a vocabulary book or an Archie comic book. :B
Thylacine333's avatar
Scruffy the Tugboat, and Thomas The Tank Engine Complete collection.

Love You Forever by Robert Munsch.

A depressing book, if you think about it, but nevertheless, I grew up with it. My mom actually would sing me the little song almost every night. (I was reading before I even finished pre-school, a bit of a brainiac before I even knew what a brainiac was, so I was still pretty young.)

OH MY GOODNESS

I LOVED THAT BOOK.
ChibiLovett's avatar
So did I! I still have it, actually, and I read it to my little cousins sometimes. :giggle:

I wish I could remember the title but I can't... The first book I ever read on my own as a child without help was about a dragon who was friends with a unicorn but didn't have wings because he wasn't brave (and went on a journey to get his wings). Was a nice story for a child to read :)
buneep's avatar
Spot the Dog. I think i read it when I was in preschool/kindergarten and it was basically like "Spot is a dog." "Spot can count." "1, 2, 3, 4, 5."
I was so amused though, despite how simple it was! :la:

One of the Little Bear books, but I couldn't tell you which one.
RioDiGennaio's avatar
The Berenstein Bears series. I forget which one exactly--I think it was the Stranger Danger one--but it was the first book series I got into that wasn't a readable coloring book. :XD:

The Cat in the Hat Came Back. I was eight years old, and had just learned how to read. However, I devoured all of the fairytales and the childrens' encyclopedias in the house that same year.
LarkwingStudios's avatar
First legitimate book? Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning. In.... Second or Third grade.

Before that, some amazing children's book, because all the old children's books I have seem to be amazing. <3 Probably The Very Hungry Caterpillar-- something along those lines.
skyhndx's avatar
"The Giant Jam Sandwich" by John Vernon Lord and "Bread and Jam for Frances"by Russell Hoban.
catluvr2's avatar
Frances wouldn't have happened to have been a badger? Because if so, I remember that book, sort of.

Uh... Honestly the first book I can remember was a story by Dick King Smith about a man who transfers his house into a home for animals...

I remember a similar book, only it was an old lady in mine. It was called "But No Elephants".

In the end, the elephant helped.

Explains a lot, I guess. d:

The first book I read on my own was a Power Puff Girl chapter book. It was 58 pages with size 16 font and when the page had a picture it would take up half the page, but I was so proud of myself.

catluvr2's avatar
That had an awesome life lesson, didn't it? Give what you can, when you can.
Arrowriter's avatar
It did! I love it, too, because it's more of an "adult" book in my opinion. I don't think little kids always get the message.

I remember reading The Jungle Book, when my sister came up and asked "What are you doing? you don't know how to read."
Which confused me, because I thought I was reading. But she was right in that I didn't understand what I was reading. I don't know what I first read with comprehension.

The first real novel I read was Bilbo. In ninth grade. Took me a whole term to finish, LOL. (Only read it during "reading time" at school.)

I started reading the Artemis Fowl series in Elementary School? And I had an obsession with the Captain Underpants series as well. ;D

I remember thinking to myself that Book Fairs were the only reason I went to school (this being before I ever set foot in a Barnes and Noble or bookstore ;) ) - Books you can keep?! I was enamored.

I don't remember, though I do remember my dad reading me this book of fairytales (I think it was Red Riding Hood or something). He'd trace his fingers along the words while he read and I'd follow though I couldn't decipher anything.

The Song and Dance Man, or maybe 50 Degrees Below Zero, they were my favourites. My first non-picture, novel book was called The Dark Garden. At least, I think it was. It's the first book I remember anyway.

I don't remember what my first first book was, but my first "Long" book was called Catwings. I think it was about kittens with wings trying to escape a city to find a new home. I read it in the first or second grade. It's actually the only book I remember from elementary school...

Well, the first one I ever read 100% on my own was the first Harry Potter. My mother promised me a bike if I read it. I'm pretty sure that this was her attempt to not get me a bike as back then I didn't like reading and I was pretty young as well. Finished it in a week though. Got my bike and haven't stopped reading since.

i think it was a Richard Scarry's Busy Town book.  i clutched on to that thing like it was the 10 commandments.

The Secret Garden....
someone bought it for me when I was very young and it sat on my shelf taunting me with it's beautiful cover but no illustrations and I used to say to myself "One day I will read you and i will be a grown up" I think I was about 6 when I read it the first time on my own, and thinking "I am an adult now"

if only being an adult was so simple.

Funnily enough, a book of bible stories for kids.
I say it's funny because I grew up to be an atheist.
Kagamika's avatar
A similar thing happened to me, I was looking around a classroom and found it. I read it because I wanted to try and make it through the whole book. :D It didn't really affect how I saw the world since, even as a kid, I was an atheist.
