I would suggest what I have, an Asus if you care about graphics, art making, or gaming. It's very good for visual stuff and processing big programs like photoshop, along with other things open, and games.

Look at Dell's website. Some of their laptops are on the pricey side but their builds are more than solid. I personally own an Acer but that was due to lack of funds more than anything.
CloudsdaleCompanion's avatar
I'd say Lenovo T Series too. Look out for the T430 or T530.

HP is the best brand according to my experience...

now i am using 4th of my laptops of HP...

its HP elitebook and its an awesome machine..
WilljCreations's avatar
I'll have a gander at HP, thanks for the response

I had an HP Pavilion a few years ago and it was awesome, so stayed with HP when I needed a new one. Bought another Pavillion about a year ago (Pavilion dv6) and it's physically rubbish. It performs beautifully, don't get me wrong, but in the year I've had it one of the speakers has blown out, the fingerprint reader stopped working, the lid switch is wonky (when it's closed it doesn't realize that it's closed and thus constantly comes on and off unless I shut it down entirely), the plastic case around the edges has cracked in a few places, and a hotspot has burned into the bottom of the screen. I doubt I will buy another consumer line HP after this one :(

I've heard good things about their business sector with the Elitebooks, though. I would just be wary of their consumer line, as it seems to have gone downhill quite a bit in my experience.
WilljCreations's avatar
oh right, that sounds really unfortunate :s and thanks for the feedback
Anything's better than a Mac.
WilljCreations's avatar
yeah well except maybe a chromebook
xTernal7's avatar
Yup, Chromebook would be worse.
AzuPantsu's avatar
Lenovo definately. And if its out of your price range, look for coupons or sales, they ALWAYS have them. Also student discount (if you're a student)..
Though if you go with lenovo, go with the thinkpad series X, T or W only.

thanks for the feedback :)

I would say ASUS if you can afford it.

Dell can take one heck of a beating, but don't think you're getting very far with customer support when you need them.

Alienware looks beautiful from the outside, but ever since their merger with Dell, their quality has taken a downfall. If you can afford them, go with an ASUS instead.

Samsungs are decent but can either be reliable beasts that never break or can be an absolute P.O.S (I personally never liked their design).

Toshiba has had a bad name in the past but are definitely seeing quality improvements.

MSI is very low budget, they are great when they work, but have a rather high failure rate when put under stress.

HP (and Compaq) are very nice as far as their business models go, but have a nasty habit of getting hotter as they age.
I personally owned a HP 635, It was real nice and rarely got warm; but now it gets hot beyond reason, even though I replaced the fan, used artic silver to replace the thermal paste and a variety of other things to attempt to make it run cooler.

If you want any more information on any specific brand or model, I can definitely tell you more.
xTernal7's avatar
Suprisingly, overheating isn't a problem with mine HP (3 years +)... But fans are loud as fuck.
1Sonicsky1's avatar
Heh, well you can try to take the fan assembly apart and oil the bearings or sleeves (depending on the model of the fan). That can bring the noise level down a bit as well as increase the life of the fan.
1Sonicsky1's avatar
Heh, That's a pretty normal scenario right there. :)
HP's are bad with doing that, but I've had Toshiba and a few Dells that were even worse.
I even had to deal with a laptop that had rivets used to hold it together (can't remember it's brand though).
xTernal7's avatar
That's why my favourite technique for cleaning laptop fan is compressor. At 8 bar.
1Sonicsky1's avatar
True, but you can't just spray oil into the fan :XD:
I use compressed air when I can, but I still prefer manually taking it apart, as that also allows me to check the hardware for any components that have failed or are starting to fail.
WilljCreations's avatar
Thanks for the response, its really helpful. Have you ever used Acer?
1Sonicsky1's avatar
Welcome, I always try to keep my information as unbiased as possible.

(As a little side note to start with, Acer and Gateway merged a little while back)
I haven't had too much experience with their desktop or laptop models personally but I have heard that they tend to lapse in the quality of the build as you get closer to the budget models.
Here is a link to a set of ratings for Acer [link]

However, Acer makes pretty decent LCD monitors, I have have been using their 20" model for 3 years now and so far no problems.
WilljCreations's avatar
ah right ok, thanks for the feedback, extremely helpful
1Sonicsky1's avatar
You're very Welcome. I'm glad to have been of help.
WilljCreations's avatar
alright thanks for response

Lenovo X or T series. Or if you don't need much power, take the old IBM ones.
WilljCreations's avatar
Yeah the Lenovo seem a bit out of my price range. Thanks for the response
Karinta's avatar
Samsung is pretty high-quality. Don't get Toshiba. They break down.
WilljCreations's avatar
oh right thanks for the response :)

Lenovo is pretty darn good.

I agree! I've had 3 ThinkPads (X1 that I still use at home, X100e and...one I can't remember from 14years ago) so far and I'm pretty happy with all 3 purchases! Simple design, good keyboard and the signature red nub ;)

ThinkPads' price range is on par with Apple products though.... It was hard to justify spending over $2k while still in uni...but it was definitely worth it! Also, I've noticed that Lenovo's more friendly-priced IdeaPad brand has a few nice models too!

P.S. JimField, your comment signature....I like.
WilljCreations's avatar
Thanks for the response I will have a look
I recently bought a new laptop. HP ProBook 4530s. It came with 4GB of Ram and 500 HDD. So far, it is doing a good job. Not having any issue with it.

But regarding good laptop brands, I might not be able to give you an expert opinion about that.

WilljCreations's avatar
alright thanks for the help anyways
WizardOfUnseen's avatar
It matters more which model you are buying rather than the brand. While researching for a good laptop two years ago, I read so many conflicting reports. For example, apple's macbook pro is an amazing model. Asus producs some amazing laptops. It all comes down to what is your budget and exactly what kind of work you would be doing with your laptop.
ExoticJackal's avatar
I heard several people telling me that about my Asus laptop that was a POS, that normally they're very good. Like, mine had no sound, and I couldn't download ANYTHING but firefox. That's all I got. The CD drive wouldn't work, so I couldn't install Word or Sims, and the sound was fucked up. Note: Brand. New. Not refurbashed. All the praise I see for them is making me reconsider getting one when this HP desktop finally craps out.
WizardOfUnseen's avatar
What does being able to download anything have anything to do with the model?
ExoticJackal's avatar
The fact that it wouldn't let me do anything......and it was an Asus.....
WizardOfUnseen's avatar
Don't know much about computers do you?
ExoticJackal's avatar
Jesus.
Asshole much?
All I said was that I had a horrible experience with my first Asus, and listed why.
WizardOfUnseen's avatar
I understand that but from the list of problems you told me, the laptop itself had a lot of issues Think about it If that model had those problems then that would have been common knowledge right? Give me the model of the laptop

Also, being able to download has nothing to do with the machine kiddo

ah yeah I know, just there are some Brands that are just awful I am just trying to avoid those and find out a variety of good brands then I will try and find a good model from those. Thanks for the response :)

Don't go for the hype, see what makes more sense
WilljCreations's avatar
Yeah alright thanks
Rifka14's avatar
Defiantly don't get an HP, I don't know if it's just my luck but I've bought 3 HP laptops that crashed after two weeks or so (I didn't even get a chance to download something that could make it crash) :x I don't even think about buying an Apple laptop because they're super expensive and I prefer Windows (Although Apple computers last longer and are very sturdy). I know that Dell desktop computers are very good but their laptops tend to heat up after a couple of hours of just browsing the internet. I got a new Sony Vaio laptop two days ago and so far it's very good, it has windows 8 so there are A LOT of cool things that you can do with it. I don't know about gaming, but it's good for school or work and also for entertainment. I don't think it will crash soon because I know that Vaio laptops also last much longer than others. (I also got for only $430 because it was on display) Also Toshiba laptops are pretty good too!
So that's all the computer knowledge I can pull up as of now =P hope it helps!
ExoticJackal's avatar
It's probably just you. Most of my family uses HP, and the products remain faithful to us until they're just used too darn much and have too much crap on them that won't be removed because of the way computers operate, and they slow down. The only issues I EVER had with my HP, was a full out crash, which was my own fault.
Rifka14's avatar
I guess I just have bad luck with HP :iconmiseryplz:
ExoticJackal's avatar
Just like I apparently just have issues with ASUS :dead:
Rifka14's avatar
lol I've never used ASUS =P
WilljCreations's avatar
Yeah I have dealt with Dell laptops in a computer repair shop and they are just awful, I currently have a Toshiba it still works just runs a bit slow, so need to upgrade really. I am not sure if I want to get windows 7 or 8 yet. But thank you for the response it will help
DFX4509B's avatar
Which Dells? 'Cause XPS, Latitude, and Precision are actually their better stuff.
WilljCreations's avatar
I don't remember what they were and oh right I will have a gander at them
Rifka14's avatar
Oh I see, I also think that if you know it's good then you should just upgrade :)
You're welcome ^_^
WilljCreations's avatar
hmm maybe, still need to do a lot more research
DTrinidad's avatar
I hear great things about Maingear and Puget.
WilljCreations's avatar
not particularly looking for a gaming computer, though would like one
DTrinidad's avatar
I suggested them to you because I hear they have great customer service. No matter how good the product is, there's always a chance it can fail but great customer service makes up for it.
WilljCreations's avatar
ah right, yeah that is always important. thanks for the response
Philluppus's avatar
Dell is stilll a great product,
Samsung is becoming more solid,
Hp is a big nono now a days
and Sony is lacking quality lately,
best value for money is Acer or Asus,
but remember that it is really depending on each model each given season cos
they change source of the parts each time each season,

my personal experience though.
WilljCreations's avatar
I don't trust Dell as a great product and never had a Samsung or HP but I think I will have a look at Asus models. Thanks for the response
DFX4509B's avatar
What about Sager?
WilljCreations's avatar
oh right I'm in the UK so they probably don't ship over, thanks for the response
PepperSeeds's avatar
^ agreed indefinitely with this guy
WilljCreations's avatar
They do seem quite good, but I want Windows and main OS for now
WilljCreations's avatar
There arnt as many applications for Ubuntu as there are for windows
xTernal7's avatar
There's more applications on Linux than you think.

Opera (and other inferior browsers, such as Firefox or Chromium), Amarok, Skype, GIMP, MyPaint, LibreOffice, Blender, RawTherapee, NetBeans/Eclipse, VLC, Dropbox, Steam (with limited number of games), Minecraft (, etc) and 50% of all Windows applications (via Wine/PlayOnLinux. Performance may vary. Guild Wars 2, WoW, Sim City 3000* and certain more obscure apps are proven to work, MS Office 2007+, Sim City 4 Deluxe, on the other hand, don't tend to.

Also, you're doing it right by staying clear of Ubuntu and its shitty DE.

*Games via Wine/PlayOnLinux/Steam work only if you have proprietary drivers for graphic card installed.
WilljCreations's avatar
I would still rather have a dual boot, at the moment windows just seems to be able to access more. But I am sure in a few years time Linux will be the best
xTernal7's avatar
Actually, I feel I'm able to do more with Linux. When I first started to sniff around Linux, I noticed how 3/4 of tutorials on how to do stuff included use of terminal and figured that Windows is the easy, user-friendly OS and Linux is just totally complicated.

Wrong. With a DE that provides nice UI (like KDE, unlike Unity and Gnome 3), things are just easy as they are in Windows and in some cases even easier (case in point: connecting to Eduroam. It's easier to set everything up in Linux.)

But yeah, I too still have dual (actually, tripple) boot for whenever I want to play games (other than Minecraft, others generally don't work because AMD didn't release proprietary drivers for my graphic card).

delusionalHamster's avatar
Are you sure about that? What applications do you need that you can't run on ubuntu or some other linux OS?
WilljCreations's avatar
Nah I am not really sure, but I would still rather have a dual boot of linux rather than having it as a main OS
stipend's avatar
don't get a vaio (sony) if you're hoping to have access to regularly updated video drivers.
they don't allow you to use video drivers from video card manufacturer websites...
WilljCreations's avatar
alright ok, I never really considered Sony but thanks for the heads up. Thanks for the response

I have two Alienwares and I love them .

(To be fair the brand has been slowly sliding downhill, I'm not sure I'd buy a third.)
WizardOfUnseen's avatar
Awesome, which models?
WilljCreations's avatar
I can't afford Alienware and other people say they are overprice anyways so I am going to stay away. Thanks for the response
PepperSeeds's avatar
Isn't Gateway kind of taking over the gaming rigs lately? i think their price range is cheaper too, however
Alienwares are TOO SEXY
DFX4509B's avatar
Gateway. Sucks. You want a good gaming laptop, go for ASUS RoG, Alienware, or Sager.
shininginthedarkness's avatar
Alienwares are super sexy.
I'm not up on desktop trends, strange as it sounds I don't really game on my computers.
Imperius-Rex's avatar
HP makes really nice laptops, but I've heard some very good things about Apple and Samsung.
WilljCreations's avatar
Ah right ok, Apple are too expensive for me thanks for the feedback
PR-Imagery's avatar
What is it being used for?
WilljCreations's avatar
Needs to be able to run Adobe Suite, eg Photoshop, AE, Dreamweaver etc and mostly general use.
WilWhalen's avatar
I've always gotten the least bloat and most performance to dollar out of Asus - currently using a G73 laptop, and it can handle anything I've needed it to so far. Used it wasn't far outside your budget when I got it a year ago (750 USD, or about £475), but I got the fully decked one with bluray, so you can likely find one cheaper at this point.
WilljCreations's avatar
Ah right ok, I guess I will have a look at Asus, thanks for the response

Asus and Sony are good. Although I have never owned myself I have friends who had luck with Toshiba.

DON'T BUY DELL! Dell is dumb. I have never had luck with them. They are shit. And avoid Alien ware. They are overpriced dell computers with an alien on them.

I have always had the best luck with Asus. It is currently both my laptop and desktop brand, an I will not hesitate to buy another one.
WilljCreations's avatar
I currently have a Toshiba its old, so its slow, but was alright before that but not the greatest. and yeah I would never but a dell I have known for a while they are awful.

I might have to look at Asus lots of people say they are good. Thanks for the response

Decent Brands on a Budget: Dell, Lenovo, HP (Envy Line Only)
Better for the Money: Asus, Sony
Now you're just being crazy: Apple, Samsung Series 7, MSI, Origin PC, Maingear, Digital Storm

Stuff not to avoid like the plague: Anything HP under $500, Alienware, Acer

A budget to go from would help us in the forums quite a bit though.
WilljCreations's avatar
this is what I was considering but not sure what Samsung are like as a brand [link]
CinderBlockStudios's avatar
yeah that's ok. Windows 8 without a touch screen is going to be irritating. You're budget isn't going to get you anything real powerful, but that would be a fine machine for general use.
