It's the letter "N" in Arabic. Christians in Iraq are called Nasrany (Nazarenes). The Islamists who have driven the Assyrian Christian population from Mosul and other Iraqi cities have marked the homes and businesses of the Christians with this letter. They are demanding that they either convert, or submit and pay the "jizya", a poll tax that Islam allows to be imposed on Jews and Christians in exchange for protection. If they refuse they must either leave or be killed. The homes and businesses so marked are then open for looting by the gunmen once their owners have fled.
