Make sure the photo has a clear subject, and that it's in focus. I also try to make the lines (such as the horizon) level. I use a digital camera with 2.0 megapixels, so the details come out well, but filesize isn't too large. I basically try to capture interesting angles and scenery. I also try to make sure nothing takes the focus away from the subject. I can't offer much more advice than that, as I'm a novice as well.
