First you have to write down he/she's personality and flaws to balance them so they won't seem unrealistic. Then you draw them with a big of logic and imagination. Like why she wears this? Will this benefit her when he/she fights? Won't it be difficult to fight? Will that protect them from death? That kind of thing. Then you put these characters in situations and try to imagine how this will effect them later and how they learn from the experience.

You could add some special abilities, one or two but it also has to have flaws and be believable.
