Thank you. The key to luminous shading is underpainting. I paint all of the shading at once using just shades of a single color (usually a medium beige with desaturate highlight and saturate shadow). Then I use adjustment layers and mask to color it. This creates shading uniformity across the image and also encourages a good color balance.
