Hey, I saw your comment on the forum. Thought I'd do my bit and seek out some talent for recognition, and my friend your gallery is amazing, I'd love to know your technique, how do you create such realistic renditions of your faces. Good work

Thanks man! Forgive my late response, I was very busy with my first big gallery exhibition, and haven't been online much. I have a close friend who's a profossional photo journalist, and he shoots reference photos for me. It's kind of like a performance, I go with a lot of ideas and he shoots my poses to use for my projects.

That's really cool, it's useful having friends with skills. It's reassuring to know you use photo ref, as an artist I don't use enough so to see the benefits really push the point. And congrats on the exhibition, I imagine you did very well. Good luck in the future. :)

Unless you have a photographic memory, or like bad anatomy, always use reference. Photo or from life, all "good" artists do or did, until they have the confidence to start creating from their practiced memory, (if you pay attention, even great illustrators like Sean Murphy and Greg Capullo recycle the same facial features in most of their characters, and that's because they're working from practiced memory). It's subconscious. Take pictures of people. Talk a friend into taking pictures of you in poses you want to draw, it's only awkward at first. It's kind of like acting, it starts to get fun.

And thank you, my show did pretty well, and I'm very excited about that. My art isn't what people are used to seeing in galleries, so I had no idea how people would respond to it, if at all. I'm still processing and learning from it, and very excited about pushing forward!

Good advice, thank you. I have always underrated how effective reference can be, I have experimented with photos of myself for things like heroic poses etc, and your right it is awkward, but the outcome is worth it. Thanks for the replies, I look forward to seeing more of your works.

Reference is truly essential. You're mind's eye needs to be developed just like any other muscle, skill, sport, etc.

I appreciate the interest in my work, good luck!
