Here's a list of things I wrote up that you can do when you start on deviantART. Avatars is on the list.
Things to do:
You can go up to the top of your page and click the "submit" button if you want to start putting up your art work. It will take you through several screens that will let you choose a category and gallery and then a page where you can browse your hard drive for the file to upload it.
Or you can go to the top of the page and click on "profile" and then "user page display" to fill out all your information if you haven't done that yet.
Or you can click on "journal" if you want to write an introduction for yourself.
Or you can click on the big "deviantART" at the upper left and it will take you to the front page where you can browse other people's artwork and add some things to your favorites if you like. (To do that just click on the piece and then there will be an "add to favorites" button under the piece.)
You can also click "random deviant": [link] and it will take you to a random user somewhere on the site. That can be a lot of fun.
To add someone to your watch list (friends list), you go to their page (by clicking on their name) and click on the "deviantWATCH" button at the top right. This will take you to your friends list page and you can check off whether you just want to list them as a friend or whether you want to watch for new work from them, for their journal, or for their scraps. You check off the appropriate boxes and hit update and that person is then on your watch list.

To help support the Literature community we hold regular contests. It is an opportunity for you to get involved and gain some exposure. Contest winners will be featured in a news article and a journal entry--as well as other fabulous prizes. Please read this article for more information on how you can participate!
