Those are all different types of compressed image files.
JPG (or JPEG) is good if the image has lots of colors, like photos. Compression levels can be set but more compression means less quality.
PNG is good if the image has less colors than, say, a photo...like cel-shaded drawings. It can also do transparencies.
GIF is the same as PNG except it can do animations also.
And as you might already know, BMP is the totally uncompressed image file.
