if youre textureing just for your own models, then it dosent really matter what size you make your texture maps or how many polys your model has, but bigger is better as they say
if youre textureing for a game, then the size of the texture map and the poly count of the model do matter. in that case, smaller is better! as this reduces the load on the game engine, and you get faster game play!
normally texture maps for games are 1024x1024 & 512x512, with some newer games using 2048x2048 due to the higher machine specs they require..
im sure if you looked through the DA resources you could find plenty of tutorials to help you out with lighting, unwrapping and texturing..
I was wondering what size image you generally work in for your texturing?
Also how you go about lighting the models?
I am interested it doing texturing and 3d modeling and you love some pointers.
I hope to be adding some 3d models soon.
