Good reference is the key. The better your references, the better your paintings/drawings will be.
It helps to understand your subject matter. Anatomy is also very important. If you understand anatomy, be it animal or homo sapiens the more realistic your work will be.

Practice is also key. Practice as much as time allows you to. Practice, practice, practice.

This site is a great resource for excellent references for pretty much any subject. Also there are plenty of other sites on the web (google is your friend) that has great references. [link] Stock.xchng is an awesome place to find photos.
