because fat people can go to the gym

sure they can!
If they can afford a gym membership, if they can get to a gym, if they are physically able to work out, if they get clearance from their doctor TO work out, if they have health insurance TO get clearance from their doctor to work out, if they are mentally healthy enough to cope with fitness, if they lack any other form of obligation that leaves them free time to go to the gym, and if they have the ability / desire too after working a job to be able to afford the gym membership and most importantly if they want too.
then yea! they can... but they seems like a very small margin of very privileged people.
