When I was 16 years old, I was on a school trip in Finland. We visited the glass factory in Iitalla and watched the show there. The glass maker was just creating a paperweight, but I was thrilled....
So I started my apprenticeship for glass making two years later.
Everyone told me: "That´s not a job for women!" But this urged me to show them what I can do.
Yes, its a damn hard job. Terrible hot, sometimes heavy and you have to take care that you wont burn yourself (Never ask a glass maker how many times he burns his fingers!).
My apprenticeship starts 2002. I worked in an old factory where they create lampshades, candle holder or even vases.
On the furnaces were six glass makers. Then they also had two 3rd year apprentice, two 2nd year apprentice and Bastian and me for help (So we were the 1st year!).
It is clear that the newbie has to learn a lot, I was not alone with that. The truth was that the boss let us just done the donkeywork and after half a year were allowed to practice on the furnace for maybe.. a few days!!
So after a few weeks I realize that there was no going on in this working place. So I wrote some applications again, to all glass huts in Germany and left this factory.
I go on with my apprenticeship and finished it, finally, in a smaller factory. I had luck at that time, because normally they didn't use to train glass makers, and the taskmaster was very skilled. So I learned how to work with glass.
There was much time to practice alone and there were also the shows for the tourists I have to do. And in the end my apprenticeship was very successful, and after it, I found a job very fast.
I worked there about a year. It was a young company and I always asked myself: "Why the heck will this guy engage me? Yes, I´m young, skilled and I know the business. But he needs somebody who is working in this business for long long time (I was working with glass for two years at that time, not enough for a crafts person to handle that much responsibility like he lays on me)."
But he was sure, that he can manage it: He wanted to show me the collection and I had to practice. In the end we had no time for done it like he always planned. So we just made one show for tourists after another (I´ve never repeat the same speech that much! Serious, I was bored by my own voice!). That went on through the whole year. And then for January and the following months he has no book entry for shows... he didn´t needed me and so I was dismissed.
I am starting a new apprenticeship in summer and I will work in a glass factory there, so far I do have a job again ...
