This is more of a black metal community than music like Metallica or Napalm Death...
Well, i feel that Immortal have been a quite important band in the norwegian black metal scene, together with Burzum, Mayhem and emperor.
Christian Vikernes (Count Grishnackh) must be the most important and known norwegian black-metaler, mostly because his one-man-band burzum and the killing of former Mayhem bandmate Euronymous. (1993 i believe)
my oppinions, please say if you dont agree (dimmu got more like a synt band, so i dont like them anymore)

I feel that everyone is focusing way too much on the norwegian bm scene.. there's good bm from everywhere around the world
there is... just recently i found a good band from portugal, i think... they're called nepthys. my theory is, if it's not from USA, it's good. 
well, nile is from north carolina, i think. they're good but not black metal, i believe.
