Crystal is an adaptation of the storyline in the manga. If you're expecting all of Sailor Moon to be like the 90's anime, you shouldn't - the 90's anime is actually the farthest from the source material. The characters and story are very different from the manga. The other adaptations of the story, such as PGSM and Sera Myu, are much closer to the source material, with Crystal being the closest.
I feel about the same as you regarding the seasons - I actually really liked SuperS, and R was probably my least favorite for lots of reasons - mainly they ruined a bunch of my favorite characters. Super was okay, and the first season was okay.
PGSM is much more heavily character driven than any other adaptation, with a focus on a developing storyline and characters and some really interesting plot points not seen in other adaptations.

Well I didn't really know what to expect for Crystal until I saw it. Unfortunately, looking further into it, sometimes it just got so boring to watch; some episode felt like pure exposition... There's things that only work in manga format.
I see... Super was okay and Season 1 was not bad... but looking at the series as a whole, it just so... weird; it's like Season 1 is a different show entirely.
