Well, he did the level design and programming, basically. He hasn't worked on L4D2 mods and is rarely on DA, I talk to him all the time though. The new music was made by BluePython. So, honestly, it was a collaboration between three people. Modeling characters, texturing them, rigging and animating them are all on a whole different level of difficulty. That's all the stuff I do. To be honest, I just like making things from scratch, but retexturing is actually easy, once you have the UV map set up for it. It's all about extracting information and allowing yourself to work on it. Then, the modifications of code come into play. That's how the retexturing works. Newbies tend to have issues regarding that, but that's all part of a learning process.

But all that aside, you just have to put some time into working on creating a decent storyline, characters, and puzzles (in the case of the Penumbra/ Amnesia series).

That was very helpful, thanks a bunch Jeff! I have the Coward's Debt, but I can't find chemical #1. I completely agree that an Amnesia custom story is a great start to 3d modeling, game design, and 3d art. What program do you use to retexture? Model editor? Would a photoshop texture or a real texture from google images work on an amnesia model (ex. a table or wallpaper?) I also will start making a practice custom story that contains every single custom monster ever encountered, but it will not be posted anywhere because I do not want copyright infringement from other modders. I know i'm using some music and sound effects (I get it from Youtube or Itunes) from probably copyrighted sources on my custom stories that will be posted, but I don't think it will be a problem. A few have been taken down because of that, but I think it's a low-risk. I can always swap files that aren't copyrighted. I plan on making at least 5 custom monsters, but i'm confused with 3D modeling in Maya (is that what you use?)

I can't help you with the game mod. I was there, beta testing it for Damascus, but I didn't get to help with making it. I don't remember too much from it, just because I've had a busy couple weeks.

Just so you know, I don't re-texture anything, I make all my models from scratch. My textures are a combination of real-life photographs (ones that I take, because it's potentially copy-right if done any other way with anyone else's pictures... that is to say, without their permission) and my own ability to draw. I even made some of the textures from scratch by just drawing and painting. I use photoshop, primarily. Everyone is different, I know people who use gimp, sketchbook pro, paint, corel, etc. I also use a normal mapping program, specifically sculpting programs, to make high-def models to get normal maps from to make my textures pop even more.

Our music was made by someone, so our sources were not pre-copyrighted. He copy-righted it after we used it and he made the music solely for our mod. If you use music from copy-righted sources, do not post it or you may get sued.

I use Maya for 3d modeling, rigging, texturing and animating. It's a difficult program. I know some people who use 3DS MAX and Blender. Blender is a weird program, but it's entirely free. MAX is known for being one of the best 3d modeling programs around, but it sucks at animation and rigging. 5 custom monsters sounds like a lot, especially if they are your first. I'd suggest one or two. Good luck!

This is so helpful, and I think that i'll have a ton of fun doing these custom stories. Unfortunately, I absolutely have to use some copyrighted content in order to make the custom stories turn out the way they're supposed to. For example, if I want to make a Scooby-Doo one, I need voice clips and Scooby-Doo music. The Scooby-Doo Amnesia idea was inspired by peppermintjam.deviantart.com/a… . I also had the plan in mind before seeing this awesome picture. The GTA 5 one will need sound clips and music from the actual game too, but i'm not doing that until the arseholes release it on PC hopefully next fall. Maybe then I can find Trevor's model as well as all sound files instead of making him from scratch. First, as I said, I am doing a test custom story that features every single monster and custom monster that I've encountered so far. There will be different monsters in different levels (when you open the doors to a new area). I'm thinking of each level featuring a different monster and making the monster fit the environment better. This is one of the songs that I want to use in an Amnesia custom story www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gi1hZp… Think it would be cool to see in Amnesia? This custom story is only going to be made for a few people (including you and Damascus if you want), so copyright won't be an issue. I'm only going to ask for permission to use some content from A Coward's Debt and The Great Work including the weeper, intelligencer, and golem. Even though Damascus doesn't want anyone else using them in uploaded custom stories, I still think it's okay if I don't upload it for anyone to see or play (it won't be uploaded anywhere, I promise you guys). I'll just send it by email or share from google drive. BTW, I beat and won A Coward's Debt. It was a really good storyline, but the ending pissed me off. I wish it had a happy ending even though Jean sounded like an arse. Something funny is how I thought the Weeper's head and neck looked like a penis XD. What are Motionbuilder, Softimage, and Smoke like? Have you ever tried them before? I have Maya, Mudbox, and Blender. I also have Adobe Audition CS6 and Adobe Photoshop CS6 Extended. If you guys would ever like to help me out with my custom stories, then feel welcome, even though I really don't think it would happen. Probably because I still need a story and everything. Tips, advice, and directions with certain parts I get stuck on would be highly appreciated, though. Are you the one who created the custom monsters?

I created all the creatures, their textures, their animations, a few of the assets from the the two mods (chairs and tables for example, the pikachu doll from The Great Work). I also worked on Fekete Keres 2 (the monsters/ girls and a lot of objects including walls that pulse and such).

Damascus ultimately left the decision up to me, as far as letting people use my monsters. I said no to most people, because nearly no one credits me and because I wanted Damascus to keep it as his. The mods were presents from me to him, specifically the monsters and models I made/ added.

I don't use all of those programs, but I've played with a few. Mudbox is like zbrush, but it's weird, to me. Smoke, softimage and motionbuilder are all foreign concepts to me. Softimage is good for cad and modeling from what I saw, but I don't like it. I don't like blender, but I can't speak for everyone. I use Audition cs3, photoshop cs3, a few cameras, a cintiq tablet, maya, zbrush, bitmap2material, alchemy, 3dcoat, headusUV, audacity, a voice recorder, and a few homebrewed tools in maya.

I'm no good at coding or programming (usually, but I'm learning programming right now on my own time). I'd give you a ton of advice, if I could, but it's all really difficult stuff. 9 hours of the day, I work at Nissan Automotive, so... I'm not home all the time either.

I loved Fekete Keres! Is the 2nd one released yet? I've been waiting for a sequel to it. If so, what is it called? Did you create the grudge girl custom monster, and is she able to be used as a hostile enemy? So, which of the programs that you mentioned is best for texturing and painting models? I just downloaded a few of them. What program do you need to make the "skeleton" for the monster? Is that Maya as well? I really wish that there was a female hostage like the ones in Justine in Amnesia, it would give gamers more ideas for custom stories. As for advice, i'll probably be asking when i'm stuck on something. Otherwise i'll keep watching tutorials, troubleshooting, and learning all of the tools. For my first custom story, it will pretty much be private between me and a few friends. I don't want to piss off any other respectable modders by using their monsters without their permission. Btw, what is cad that you mentioned?

Just Fekete Keres 2, from what I know. I remodeled and textured the girl (I guess I kind of did texture... but I don't consider it my work). I also re-rigged it. I made a few other things for their mod, no spoilers though! ;) Well, except I did make a new monster for it and he's kinda creepy.

The skeleton is part of a rig. I do all my rigging in Maya. As previously stated, Max is horrible for animation.

CAD is a specific type of model. Polygon is what Max, Maya and Blender typically use. CAD or nurb data is used by all three of those, but their nurb data tends to be very... Round...

Typical CAD data can be made in Alias or Rhino. It's used for engineers and designers.

Easiest way to think of it is... Polygon = Pixel while CAD = Vector. They behave in some of the same ways. Nurb/ CAD data is easy to texture, but is extremely heavy in math. Polygonal data is harder to UV map and texture but is lightweight.
