Comment on originality by *Bob-Rz [parent]

yeah, false memories can account for some of it. it's not to hard for the brain to see something, forget the context it was seen in, and then later remember it as an original idea. i've learned about that in my psych class, and i've experienced it first hand a few times. amazing how faulty our memories actually are.

It's not just like that with jokes, but also with fine art. We've reached an era were no art is truly criticized and anything goes. And because of all these different styles and mediums, it's hard to get a word in and say "Hey, look at my originality" when there are so many people working from so many different aspects of what art can be. I think in some ways it's great that there's so much going on, but to an artist it's very intimidating.

Ah you’re awake! I was afraid you were dead. That would have been rather awful, you know, being tied to a dead man.
I agree

I totally agree. It's really hard to find or make a joke that no one's ever done before. It's like a running race; whoever calls the joke first and well done gets it.

 One of those mysteries of life, I guess...

Is it true? Do you love me?...Say yes.
I think that is true in the writing profession as well. Say you have a good idea and you use it in a paper but then you are billed as "plagiarizing" someone else's work because it sounded way to similar. Like Bob said, can't someone else on this planet come up with something even though it has already been done before? I find that those people who get all anal about plagiarizing need to lighten up. Again, like Bob said, pretty much everything has been done, so the chances of you rehashing someone else's idea, even though you thought of it on your own, is really quite possible. I find this in a lot of my English classes that I have been taking these last couple years.

Google everything you submit...
or that thing teachers do to check and see if you've plagiarized your essay. (Probably, Google)

I agree with you completely. I have a wonderful idea for a story that I've been developing, only to find out that someone else is doing releasing a comic book next year with all the same elements. I don't want to give up the story, but I'm going to have to change so much of it... :P

Google can only find key words or text content. it can't find the content of a joke, especially if it's contained within an image or video.

That sucks about your story. Now I know I would be mad if someone just blatantly copied something of my own and didn't give any acknowledgment of it, but yeah, having everything "already been done" and having people accusing people of stealing stuff is beyond logic. Too many people are greedy, I think.

Yeah, I know how you feel... in art school if people say, "oh, this artist did this-and-this, maybe you should do something like that!" I'm immediately turned off because it's already been done before. I guess originality is all dependent on the perspective of the artist. :\
