Generally what I do is I ask the client what his or her budget is; how much he or she is willing to spend on a piece. Then we negotiate from there based on the time I would have to spend to complete it. I do charge extra for adjustments made after initial sketch and colour layout are agreed upon.

Then again I'm a scrub. :hmm:

hmmmm...I've never got anything for my art but I do howerver get some cash by just being hired by my schoolmates to draw something or even paint something up their walls.

hmm I'd say it depends on who they're working for, but at least 250 bucks a drawing. I know artist at marvel get paid that much a page to start with (or so I hear) so it should be around the same for concept artist.

Probably not the best person to ask buuut- Depends really, if you're "creating" the ideas/concepts from scratch or if you're being directed it can be a tossup (budget, company, independent pitch, etc.). For things like promotion stuff it would lean more towards "per piece" but for production concepts and such most likely the "per hour."
And though this shouldn't be said but hell, why not throw it in, high caliber is always top dollar.

I was told per hour was usually more beneficial and rewarding for those complicated pieces you'd be struggling through, knowing you could've gotten more money. You could record the times you work on the pieces and how long you worked on it to calculate the time used.

The problem I had was the honesty issue. People are really hesitant when it comes to that, no matter how much you claim your trustworthiness.

So far, what I decided to do was keep that hourly wage for large pieces that I know would greatly vary in time and complexity. I have fixed prices on the types of items and styles most people have wanted from me.

yeah see, exactly. I'd feel weird charging per hour, I mean you could easily cheat it and be like "YEAH I WORK FOR ....89 HOURS!"

But if you have a strong relationship with the company, I could see it working..I'd just feel weird doing it.

Hourly rates are the best way to go I think.

It all depends on how fast you can come up with a finished concept. The faster you are, the higher you can charge per hour. 40-70 bucks per hr should be a good starting point.
i hoenstly have never heard of an by-hour payment (i assume this is for single pieces?) but if you're going to do by-piece, i warn you to look over the contract carefully, sometimes the commissioner likes to be a jerk and puts in something that basically translates into "if you don't have it done by the end of the week, you still have to draw it and do it for free"

Mhm. I mean, it's difficult for anyone to emphasis their trustworthiness, especially when this program has recently been added and you don't have "references." I wasn't able to pick up any interest because of the common hesitance. But, then again, I would be very hesitant aswell.

I surveyed some of my watchers and they usually preferred a price per piece or fixed prices for a certain style. From that, you can simply guestimate the time it'd take you to do that and work off that. Sometimes you'd get a good deal, sometimes you don't.

I know a lot of people that charge both ways. I, clearly, havn't cranked out anything worth selling, but I would go for by piece. I mean, talk it over with the client, ask for budgets, and then start your work on it. Add in a bit on hours, but not too much. I know someone who had a piece in class and a lady saw it afterwards and offered him $350 right on the spot. So shoot somewhere around there.

Then again... concepts can be worth a lot more... so, don't go by me, please. lol
