Its a very subtle light and thats why I figured that his white face would pick it up and the dark purple would take more intensity to start showing the hue. And it made the face more interesting, perhaps its a spotlight?!

Hmm. Okay, that's convincing 
But I think it would have been helpful if you added at least a few greenish highlights to the cloth, so the viewer would get it more easily.
