I hope you don't mind my asking but how does it work? You just go where you feel like going because you know your pictures will sell - or do you get sent to a particular place by a client?

I pick the places and hope to get images that sell. I look for places that seem to have good potential for dramatic images that are still fresh and somewhat unique. So far it's worked out OK.

OK, seriously, you have to at least tell me the beginnings were difficult :D

It was definitely difficult in the beginning. I was a national park backcountry ranger in Yosemite and saw amazing things but they didn't translate into photographs that captured what I saw. I read a lot and kept practicing and slowly started to get the hang of it. The international travel didn't start until about 5 years ago. My photos from the first trip to Venezuela and Patagonia sucked and I made a vow to return and really capture the unique beauty there. So it's been a long and fairly slow process to get the shots you see in my portfolio here. I'm still learning all the time too. These are just the best 1% of my shots. I don't post all of the mediocre stuff... You will get to your goals if you just get out there and shoot. Don't throw away the bad shots. Ask yourself why they are bad and how you could fix then next time. That's the secret!

Well, photography-wise I suck beyond repair... But yours is a heart-warming example to ease the anxiety I got having graduated - that all the best is beyond me now and nothing new is ever going to happen...

I dont think Michael is going to particular places because he thinks a certain photo o scene will sell, we all landscapers and nature lovers do this for passion, without passion sells are useless.
Anyways, i understood your point and your doubt about be sent by a client and walking the world taking photos.
Sorry for my intermission Michael and koteria.

Funny, I read my post / question again and you can understand the way you - I just never would have thought about it this way.
Michael's pictures are great and I can see the passion - but it doesn't work this way at the airport. At the airport they ask you where your ticket is. An American landscape photographer whose pictures sell well and so he decides to go to Brazil is one thing - but if you look at his gallery: the guy's been just about everywhere. So the question is: how do you do it?!?

I get you point.
Passion and dedication is your answer.
If you love what you do and you are good on that, and you have the persistence and patience, you sooner or later will succed and will sell photos. Obviously there is a little luck you need to make your name bigger and get sponsors, photo clinics and tours, etc.
A person who dont love what he do, who only cares about the money, who takes pictures just as a job will spent his money in a 60" LCD TV and not in a plain ticket to take more pictures in a remote place he dreams about.
That are my thoughts and philosophy.
Sory my bad english man, hope you understand what i wrote.

Your point about the 60 inch TV is a good one :D
Your creed is great and I support it fully - if only I had your amount of faith...
