[link] I use the 24-pack. They're cheap and really nice to work with. I love Dick Blick (the site); they sell all kinds of really great art supplies for low prices!
I don't know if this helps, but a trick I used for blending pastel is to color in dots or streaks--take a couple of colors and just go really fast and nick the paper a little with each color, almost like pointillism. You can build up the colors over time and get some really fantastic patterns and textures, and individual mistakes don't matter.
