Japan attacked the US because they realized since the Nazis pretty much took over Europe, no European power could stop them from annexing their former colonies. But the US still had a navy, and that could potentially prevent the Japanese from taking the oil depots at the Dutch East Indies, because we cut off their oil supply for them raping the Chinese city of Nanking, among other war crimes. They also wanted the Phillipines, which was American territory.
