I have never heard of slash being used as a term that wasn't related to male/male relationships.

Nah, that's probably just the particular fan fiction websites that you're looking on.

Slash was originally only for men, then came FemSlash. Now Slash is used for either. It doesn't always have to be same sex, either. It is sometime also used for heterosexual pairings, too. There used to be a long list of Kim/Ron slash fiction from Disney's Kim Possible. Then Disney made their relationship official. So I'm not sure if the term applies to that any more.

The more generic term is Shipping or Fan Shipping. This is basically any relationship between two fictional characters that goes beyond what's shown in the official version. It's often used for Anime more than American cartoons, I think.
