Im not sure if the Assassin's were religious or not. Personally i think the cross is a reference to the Templars (the Christian crusaders) as it is in the shape of the cross worn by them. As they were fighting against the Templars i find it unlikely that they would be Christian themselves but im really not sure about that. Long time since i played the first game to hear any background on the story of that so i could be wrong. I need to replay AC2 as well as i dont remember alot of the story

Well from my knowledge The Assassin's religion isn't 'exactly' a religion based upon today's christanity or any other religion, but more along the lines of humanities free will. They fight to keep the freedom so that all men and women have freedom without a strict dictator code set by their enemies the templars. They seek to find out the truth and to preserve mankinds free will.
