My husbands father was in China when Japan invaded -- he bought a dozen or so wind up watches for $1 each from people who were selling things to try to escape the country. Since he worked in the engine room on his ship his watches were always getting magnetized so he used the old pocket watches and when they got magnetized he threw them overboard. When they got back to the States he had one left, so, out of curiosity, he took it into a watch repair shop to see just what it was. Turned out it was a Renaissance era pocket watch worth several thousand dollars;)

Richard said he regretted all the ones he threw away, but there wasn't anything he could do about it . . . and no way he could have known about the rarity of the ones he threw away until he got back to the States and could have them appraised.
