That's funny! As I glanced down the pipes I saw that piece and my jaw dropped! Yea $300 sounds about right. Sucks when you want to use it for your art. Of course the base brings the whole thing together for artistic value and stability, just hurts my heart to think you would have to pay $300 to do it!

I'd use steel but it really causes me grief as most of my tools aren't adapted for it, the differential heating is tough on the soldier, and the long term rust issues when associated with brass suck.

Yeah steel is a whole 'nother world. I'll stick to the expensive soft metals that don't rust ;-). I find that if I scour ebay on a regular basis I can pick up plate copper at a much reduced price from folks who either have no idea, or just need to get rid of a piece they've had laying around.

Yea I do the same for watch pieces! Finally figured out the cheapest way to buy brass is to purchase roofing shim in bulk!
