if not a lot of people are involved, it just takes them forever to do it, that's all. Yes, one person can do it, but it doesn't make them heroes, it just takes too long. If I do it by myself full time, it only will take about 7 years. A pro team will finish it in a year, a half-pro team like mine will probably take 2-3 years.
Most people need to work during the week, and can only do it on their spare time, some of the more fortunate ones would have enough money stored up to work by themselves for 1-2 years and come up with something, others get grants, most of us, use our spare time.
Plus, the work load of a 5 minute, to 10 minute film is not quite the same for 20 minutes.
I already have enough help on sound, i don't need anymore, we lack animators and good clean up artists.
My crew will look big because most of them are volunteers, and can only color, average do 1-2 sequences,
a few will take upto 5-10 sequences. The devoted take upto 20 sequences.... but the show is at least 222 sequences.
