I didn't want to love him as much as I do - You see, I saw him coming by far ; I was aware from the very beginning of ME1 that his personality was all too likeable to me -- and that it was playing on my sci-fi nerd's sensible strings as would a cellist on a perfectly tuned Stradivarius. I struggled long and hard NOT to find him great.
... Needless to say, I lost.

From what I read Garrus was not actually intended as a romance option originally and the creators where quite surprised at how much demand there was for making him one. Kinda like some of the best inventions being made by accident I guess .

No, he wasn't meant to be such a heartthrob. I believe his part has been exponentially extended after ME1. ...And now, even the producers can't stop waxing poetry upon him, it's hilarious -www.trustedreviews.com/news/ma… , for instance.-
(Garrus's popularity is actually something I like to joke about - I tend to make fun of a lot of people about it, myself first and foremost -which would explain the dramatics from earlier-, and it has become sort of a meme in its own right, even amongst my friends who don't know the first thing about Mass Effect. He's so flawless, he's so loved, that it's borderline ridiculous

You are right about the things fan disagree on at time, but no for this one I didn't get any negative feedback at all IIRC.
