Also possible that she sounds too much like that stuck up...whatever...that in most shows are meant to be at least a semi-antagonist of the main character. Essentially, due to social conditioning through media, the way she acts makes viewers stereotype her into the role vis-a-vis Twilight Sparkle as is occupied by Diamond Tiara vis-a-vis Apple Bloom.
Which both shows a lack of flexibility in the mind of the viewer (for some, it takes two season watchings to get to like her) and the fact that media throws at us a lot of stereotypes*. Kids, at least young enough not to have already undergone the programming through pop-culture, should find her more likable, charming, etc.
* Remember kids, stereotyping is bad! If you do it, you're a knuckle dragging hillbilly who sleeps with his/her cousin.

Didn't Rarity work herself to near exaultion to make her friends happy? Personly after seeing that, I would lose my dislike for Rarity immeditaly.
By this I mean that it's apparent Rarity didn't charge for the dresses. It would be uncouth and beneath her, not to mention that Twilight writes in her friendship report that when a friend is willing to do you a favor that a pony should not be demanding over it (or somesuch).

A lot of people took away from that that she was still charging her friends as the line "Stay within our budget" was used in the second rendition of the song (I remember someone arguing about the charges and wondering what they were talking about). So, no, some people completely miss out on that part and think her generosity is the exception to the rule. Whereas in fact, she is a generous person, but she's a bit of a flamboyant drama queen and can sometimes act selfishly. However when that selfishness leads to fame and riches, she'd be the first to turn around and use that fame and riches to help others.
Mind you, lots of people who realize that probably just don't like drama queens.
