Maybe some of the thing that perplexes you are due to the low resolution, this is really meant to be seen much bigger. for examples, there is no wall behind the bridge, the cattails are out of focus and in the foreground.

Everything popped when you said that. One suggestion: two or three slightly larger (nearer) out of focus cattails overlapping the bridge would immediately bring all the other cattails into visual perspective.
