Crossbows exist but guns and explosives do not. There may be a sort of substitute for the gunpowder in cannons to encourage some ship-vs-ship nautical battles, but whatever it is it will NOT be commonplace and virtually nonexistant outside of ship warfare.
Your skills would serve you well among humans but, really, dragons don't care: you're just food. If you found a water naga? Well... she would be a bit more friendly (they rarely kill humans for sport). That would be your best chance - though don't be surprised if you end up in her mouth from time to time to "give here mana" and whatnot.
As far as your scenario goes, there is a fatal flaw with your plan: Sterling doesn't need to talk to use a fair portion of his magic. He is fused with a conduit for a very powerful magical sword (nearly impossible to explain if you haven't read through the first book) and, over time, he has gained adept use of storm-related magic. He can shock you and use either a pulse or a gust of wind to push himself away; at that point it is three-against-three, and you are outmatched.
Assuming you somehow had him unconscious, or that he was otherwise incapacitated, you would need to watch your backs. A dragon's tail is agile and long enough that it could feasible slink around behind you and either disarm or scatter your group - and possibly push Sterling out of harm's way. If that were the case, the dragons would take no chances: you'd be fried.
The most logical choice, knowing all the variables, would be to simply walk up and say "Hi!" to them. Crazy, right? Well... Sterling wouldn't let Embyr or Crystal (despite the sincere wishes of the latter) eat you due to his personal moral standing. You'd be under his protection and safe, provided he was awake and there at the time. Otherwise... well, what he doesn't know won't hurt him, and the girls are good at keeping secrets - even when they're digesting a few feet from their human companion
