I don't think this is ooc for Sokka. He nearly sacrificed his own well being, not to mention life, to save a village of Fire Nation citizens. And his own master is a highly respected Fire Nation member of the elite. So I think Sokka could do something like this. 
Don't forget, he also tried to talk Katara out of killing Yon Rha, the very man who killed their mother. What's more, you could even consider that he had an opportunity to harm Azula when he had her pinned against a wall during the eclipse, but he still didn't try to hurt her in any way. Azula also saved Sokka's life when they were fighting against that plantbender in the comics.
