They have unmanned defense drones.
Unmanned defense drones are a joke. I hope earth does build fighters of their own, but I guess thats up to you, the story teller. By the way my statement of the drones was meant as a statement of usefulness. For tasks such as air or in this case space superiority manned platforms are superior.
That is becoming less and less of the case, mate. Autonomous computing is becoming an actual thing, let alone simply allowing data from manned jets to augment their own algorithms. This isn't taking into account Artificial General Intelligences into the equation mind you.
So unless you can simply hack an autonomous drone without fail and subvert it, drones are going to become superior. That is why in one of my settings -A New World: A World of Conflict and Sorrow- has AGI-controlled drones and no other, as anyone including the equivalent of Hillbilly Joe Bob of Redneck Ville can hack and subvert an autonomous drone. Something that North Korea of all places cooked up during the years leading up to the 2nd Korean War and sent across the internet as a final 'fuck you'.
