Well those 'black blobs' are asteroids lol. Don't worry, this issue has been addressed already..... several times....
And the backdrop is actually a stock image. The first CoTD image I made, I wasn't in the mood to make my own, and to change it now would completely change it as a whole, but in any case, there are actually many techniques that you can utilize to make a very similar texture.
